Still Flowering in Concrete
The first month back in Auckland was an emotional whirlwind of events .
There was the realisation that we could not break our housing contract without losing our bond given the recent development that our housemates also wished to move out. With that came the frustrating but also reassuring conclusion that we would not be moving out of Auckland quite yet. Then there was the endless and tiresome job hunt that reciprocated so little response. As well as the financial devastation that our car did not pass the WOF. And to make matters even less exciting, there was the weight of the return of chores, capitalism, and concrete as a result of resettling into a city.
Nonetheless, we did find the joys and bathed in the comforts of a home where surprisingly the sun was shining and it was warmer than most of our trip. I was back to my morning yoga routine and made granola and Mahiran baked us delicious bread. We went out and enjoyed the summer atmosphere of the cosmopolitan town finding new spots we appreciated. Mahiran also joined a local tennis club and re-engrossed himself into his love for tennis.
We also took a drive South and spent the night at Rhys’ and Riley’s for Rhys’ surprise birthday party which was very wholesome.
We had time at home and we enjoyed that.
Finally, I got myself a job, I would be working for the Electoral Commission. My role would be to facilitate the processing of the Māori Electorate Option (MEO) a new legislation that was recently passed that allows people with a Māori descent to change electorates (general/Māori) whenever they wish – a politically heated subject.
Once again it was not my dream job, I would not be working with children and youth rights, but it was still cool. I was excited to be a part of this impactful organisation and I even found it fun, like a dress up game, getting ready in the morning for this formal environment – incognito an obvious outsider.
With my job came another swing to the bank account as we bought ourselves a second car. This time she would be the opposite of our beloved Hilux Surf but also her perfect duet. A tiny Toyota Starlet, with only two doors, missing a sound system, an old green paint job, and very cheap. The matchbox. I loved her. Great personality. She would be our city car, efficient for me to get to work, easy to park, and cheap on fuel.
Before diving into the monotonous rhythm of a forty hour work week, we decided to briefly re-live the good days on the road. We drove to Te Arai where we were welcomed by sunshine, blue waters, waves, and shell beaches – magnificent. After an afternoon of surfing, adventuring, and collecting shells, I along with the rest of the spectators in the water and on land saw a long lasting big splashing collectively believed to be shark. That didn’t stop Mahiran who went back in for a sunset surf in the increasingly crowded waters. We spent a restless night there in our car – constantly woken up by vehicles coming and going, many of which were middle of the night fishermen ?! It was worth it though, waking up to gorgeous pink purple skies cocooning an excited ocean. Discouraged by the weekend Auckland crowds, we headed home early and tired but also so happy to have so easily gotten away into the wonders of this land once again.
On the 25th of March I started work and our holiday officially came to an end. But with that new doors were opening themselves and we were receptive to all they would offer.
Fantastic! Merci de partager tous ces souvenirs.
Gros bisous,
maman
